In a significant move to revolutionize data handling for artificial intelligence, the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) has officially launched Storage.AI, an open standards initiative aimed at enhancing data services for AI workloads. As a global nonprofit dedicated to advancing data-centric technologies, SNIA is spearheading this project to address some of the most pressing barriers in AI focusing on performance, efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
Storage.AI will prioritize neutral, non-proprietary approaches to build a unified ecosystem that simplifies data processing and access in AI workloads. SNIA aims to work together with partners to clear roadblocks and smooth out the data pipeline, making it smooth and more efficient to deploy AI.

Backed by industry giants including AMD, Cisco, DDN, Dell, IBM, Intel, KIOXIA, Microchip, Micron, NetApp, Pure Storage, Samsung, Seagate, Solidigm, and WEKA, the initiative brings together a powerful coalition. Additionally, Storage.AI will benefit from SNIA’s strong partnerships with organizations like UEC, NVM Express, OCP, OFA, DMTF, and SPEC, further reinforcing the collaborative mission.
With AI workloads placing enormous strain on infrastructure due to high demands on latency, memory, power, cooling, and cost industry leaders agree that a joint effort under open governance offers the fastest route to progress. SNIA brings over 25 years of experience in setting industry standards, making it ideally positioned to lead this effort.

According to Dr. J Metz, Chair of SNIA, “AI’s complexity demands a unified, end-to-end approach from storage to networking to processing. No single vendor can go it alone. Storage.AI offers the neutral platform the industry needs to build interoperable, scalable solutions that work for everyone.”
Support from founding members has poured in. Executives from companies like AMD, Dell, and Pure Storage emphasized how critical seamless, high-performance data infrastructure is to unleashing AI’s true potential. Companies like Intel and Micron emphasized the importance of consistency and interoperability to drive innovation across storage and computing.
By setting a common framework, Storage.AI aims to future-proof AI infrastructure, enhance collaboration, and ultimately make AI more accessible and impactful. As the industry pivots toward an AI-first future, this initiative lays the groundwork for smarter, faster, and more resilient data ecosystems.
