The GSMA Foundry, the innovation hub of GSMA, and Khalifa University of Science and Technology, one of the UAE’s top-ranked higher education institutions, have officially announced a strategic collaboration on the opening day of MWC Doha. This partnership aims to drive telco AI research and innovation through a shared focus on knowledge exchange and digital transformation, setting the stage for next-generation telecommunications solutions.

As part of this collaboration, Khalifa University will work closely with GSMA Foundry to create specialized AI data assets, models, and benchmarking frameworks tailored for telecom applications. These initiatives will facilitate the development of open, robust, safe, and energy-efficient AI solutions, addressing the unique challenges faced by the telecom sector.

In the first phase of this landmark partnership, the GSMA and Khalifa University plan to launch several key Open Telco assets. Notably, these include TelecomGPT, a telco-first AI large language model (LLM) featuring a chat interface hosted on LightOn. In addition, they will release an Open Telco Knowledge Graph centered on 3GPP documentation, built using LightOn compute and hosted on Hugging Face. These resources aim to accelerate the deployment of accurate, telecom-specific AI models throughout the industry.

The move comes as the GSMA Open-Telco LLM Benchmarks reveal that even the most advanced general-purpose LLMs struggle with telecom-specific tasks, such as interpreting standards, troubleshooting networks, and handling highly technical telecom knowledge. By leveraging the expertise of Khalifa University’s 6G Research Centre (6GRC), the GSMA aims to bridge this gap, improving AI model performance and further supporting the global mobile ecosystem.

Professor Bayan Sharif, Provost at Khalifa University, emphasized the strategic value of the partnership:
“We are pleased to enter into this collaboration with GSMA, the global organisation responsible for the mobile ecosystem, and offer our expertise in AI for further advancing innovations in the telecom industry. Our 6G Research Center has a successful track record in contributing to local and international telecom projects, and it is fully equipped with its infrastructure and expertise to help develop AI solutions in collaboration with GSMA. We believe the synergy resulting from combining resources will lead to telecom-specific AI solutions that will address critical limitations in current AI models.”

Through this collaboration, GSMA and Khalifa University are poised to redefine telecom AI innovation, providing the industry with tools that are not only specialized but also scalable and reliable. This initiative highlights a growing commitment to leveraging AI to solve industry-specific challenges, ensuring that telecom networks worldwide can benefit from smarter, more efficient, and safer solutions.
