Achieving Data Excellence By Delivering Consistently Accurate And Reliable Actionable Insights Essential For Successful Automation using Gen AI
Today, businesses face an overwhelming influx of data—often in highly unstructured forms such as contracts, invoices, and legal agreements. For AI and automation development teams, the real challenge isn’t just managing this data but transforming it into a strategic asset that drives business value. This is the vision that ABBYY, a leader in Intelligent Document Processing (IDP), and IBM watsonx.ai, IBM’s state-of-the-art AI platform, are working together to bring to life.
The collaboration between ABBYY and IBM is creating a new paradigm in which businesses don’t just automate data processing—they unlock their full potential by making it understandable, actionable, and valuable for AI development. For AIops and intelligent automation development teams, this means a significant shift from simply automating tasks to enabling systems that drive smarter decisions and enhanced business outcomes.
Maxime Vermeir, Senior Director of AI Strategy at ABBYY, sat down with us to explain how AI can improve productivity and streamline business processes while improving the customer experience. During our conversation, we explored the promising potential of AI agents in document processing and ABBYY’s pivotal role in helping enterprises unlock greater value from their documents through AI-driven solutions.
Here’s the full interview.
AI Technology Insights (AIT) : AI agents for document processing hold great promise in 2025. Could you highlight ABBYY’s AI plans for AI agents-powered document processing?
Maxime Vermeir: ABBYY is moving the needle in enterprises’ ability to generate value from their documents with AI.
While agentic automation is definitely going to have a major impact on organizations, we’ve found that it’s a common misconception among businesses to think that AI agents are the silver bullet to solve all their automation challenges.
AI agents are an option but may not always be needed. We first help automation leaders understand their “why” before using process intelligence to identify and predict outcomes for deploying any AI tool, including AI agents. We know leaders require clear evidence that automation investments are going to drive value, improve customer experience, and boost profitability – understanding the “why” will ensure metrics track.
If you’re going to use AI agents, it’s important to give them access to the right tools and insights for them to successfully execute their tasks. It all starts with high-quality data. Without this, AI agents cannot succeed.
We advocate for data excellence by providing consistently accurate and reliable data that is needed for successful automation. Through this, it becomes a possibility to deploy agentic automation at scale.
AIT: According to the “ABBYY Global Intelligent Document Processing Trends & Outcomes Report May 2023″ report, Regional Documents requirements vary significantly. How will the partnership with watsonx.ai help solve the regional problems for users?
Maxime Vermeir: A wide range of circumstantial and geographical factors affect organizations’ document challenges globally, such as customs declaration forms between EU and non-EU member countries, or wide variations of tax forms in the US during filing season. Sometimes the formats of these documents vary drastically even within a singular type of form, demanding an IDP solution that can understand and process complex documents at a deeper level than just extraction and classification.
Incorporating ABBYY with watsonx.ai allows us to leverage the best-of-breed LLMs from one enterprise platform to another, superpowering data extraction and analysis to increase speed, accuracy, and autonomy in document processing while converting data into actionable intelligence.
Our AI models provide businesses with the tools to navigate the complexities of data processing no matter the region, language or format, with unmatched precision and adaptability. This allows users to compare the results of different large language models and choose the one that best suits their needs and preferences. The integration of ABBYY with IBM watsonx.ai is not just another AI solution; it is a new approach to data processing that leverages the synergy of probabilistic technology and deterministic AI to deliver unprecedented value and impact for digital workflows and document processes across regions.
AIT: Which AI techniques are you most excited about? How would these techniques impact the IDP and Process Mining industry in 2025?
Maxime Vermeir: While it’s difficult to choose a single one, I’m enthusiastic about multimodal AI.
It’s a game-changer to be able to handle, process, and train AI models on multimodal datasets combining text, image, and audio. IDP solutions with these capabilities open new possibilities in fields like healthcare, financial services, customer service, and manufacturing to enable more robust and context-aware outcomes. By moving beyond just text recognition and expanding to “rich” features like images or even audio, IDP solutions will have even more tools at their disposal to deepen their understanding of documents and reliability in generating actionable insights.
For example, in the financial sector, multimodal AI can revolutionize customer service by integrating text, voice, transaction records, and behavioral data to provide a comprehensive understanding of customer needs. By leveraging multimodal AI, financial institutions can anticipate customer needs, proactively address issues, and deliver tailored financial advice. Multimodal AI will become an integral part of the technology ecosystem needed to solve real business problems and will ultimately take the customer experience to the next level.
