VAST Data, a leader in AI Operating Systems, has partnered with SK Telecom (SKT), South Korea’s top telecommunications provider, to deploy its advanced AI platform on SKT’s new sovereign AI infrastructure. This cutting-edge infrastructure, powered by the latest NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, will support the nation’s growing AI ambitions.

SKT’s sovereign AI platform, named the Haein Cluster, is designed for GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) and has been chosen for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s “AI Computing Resource Utilization Enhancement (GPU Rental Support) Program.” This powerful system will play a key role in developing national AI foundation models. By merging SKT’s robust network and data center capabilities with VAST’s AI Operating System, SKT is building a fully virtualized GPUaaS environment that delivers AI model development and deployment entirely within South Korea’s borders.

Traditional AI infrastructure based on bare-metal environments often takes days or weeks to provision workloads, slowing innovation. SKT has solved this bottleneck with its Petasus AI Cloud, now integrated with VAST Data. This virtualized AI stack can launch GPU environments in just 10 minutes while maintaining near bare-metal performance, significantly accelerating AI development cycles.

The Petasus AI Cloud uses VAST’s Disaggregated, Shared-Everything (DASE) architecture on NVIDIA HGX servers built by Supermicro. This setup enables a secure, high-throughput, multi-tenant environment that can handle AI training and inference at scale.

According to DK Lee, Vice President and Head of the AI DC Lab at SK Telecom, VAST’s unified architecture has transformed their infrastructure from legacy bare-metal deployments to a production-grade, fully virtualized AI cloud. This system now powers sovereign AI workloads with unmatched performance, flexibility, and security meeting the needs of government, research, and enterprise AI projects in Korea.

VAST’s AI OS provides sovereign-grade infrastructure control, rapid GPU provisioning without performance loss, secure multi-tenant services, and a unified pipeline for both AI training and inference. It also offers flexible protocol access, carrier-grade resilience, and dynamic resource allocation at a national scale.

Sunil Chavan, Vice President for APAC at VAST Data, emphasized that this partnership is redefining national-scale AI infrastructure. By eliminating traditional bottlenecks in data movement, provisioning, and security, SKT and VAST are delivering an elastic, sovereign AI platform built for speed, compliance, and scalability setting a new benchmark for AI innovation in South Korea.
