Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless connectivity, is bringing advanced AI capabilities to the tiniest battery-powered IoT devices. By offering an ultra-low-power Edge AI solution, the company accelerates the launch of a new generation of devices that combine energy efficiency with developer-friendly usability.

Simplifying Edge AI for Billions of Devices

Nordic’s approach makes edge AI accessible for billions of connected devices worldwide. Its solutions include the nRF54LM20B SoC with Axon NPU, ultra-tiny custom Neuton AI models, and the Nordic Edge AI Lab, a development platform that streamlines edge AI integration.

“AI factories train intelligence, but Nordic deploys it – on device, at the edge, where the world happens,” said Vegard Wollan, CEO of Nordic Semiconductor. “Edge AI is no longer optional – it’s the only way to deliver safety, privacy, and sustainability at scale. Nordic’s edge AI solution enables millisecond decisions without round-trip latency to the cloud, ensures compliance through local processing, and delivers radically improved battery life for billions of connected devices. This is the new standard for ultra-low-power edge AI and Nordic is defining it.”

Next-Generation nRF54LM20B with Axon NPU

After acquiring Atlazo and its Axon technology in 2023, Nordic released the nRF54LM20B, the first large-memory member of the nRF54L Series. Integrating the Axon Neural Processing Unit (NPU), this SoC delivers up to seven times faster performance and up to eight times higher energy efficiency than competing solutions for demanding AI workloads such as sound classification, keyword spotting, and image-based detection.

The nRF54LM20B pairs the Axon NPU with 2 MB NVM, 512 KB RAM, a 128 MHz Arm Cortex-M33 plus RISC-V coprocessor, high-speed USB, and up to 66 GPIOs. Additionally, it features Nordic’s fourth-generation ultra-low-power 2.4 GHz radio, supporting Bluetooth LE, Matter over Thread, and more.

Ultra-Tiny Neuton Models Drive Efficiency

Nordic’s Neuton models are CPU-run AI models typically under 5 KB, making them up to ten times smaller, faster, and more efficient than conventional CPU-based solutions. Developers can use Nordic Edge AI Lab to generate Neuton models for anomaly detection, activity recognition, biometric monitoring, and other applications, all while preserving privacy and eliminating cloud dependency.

Edge AI Becomes Integral to Product Design

By combining Edge AI Lab, Neuton models, and the Axon NPU, Nordic allows developers to embed intelligence effortlessly. For instance, a global supply chain solution enhanced its smart tracking devices to detect real-world handling events such as shocks or shakes directly on nRF54L Series SoCs. The AI insights were deployed across an entire fleet seamlessly, powered by Nordic’s nRF Cloud lifecycle services.

“With Nordic Edge AI Lab, Neuton models, and the Axon NPU, Nordic makes advanced on-device AI practical for every embedded developer,” said Oyvind Strom, EVP Short-Range BU at Nordic Semiconductor. “Developers get the simplicity to move fast, and the disruptive performance to scale from wearables to industrial sensing – all enabled within Nordic’s trusted ultra-low-power hardware solutions.”

As intelligence shifts to the edge, over-the-air management and deep observability become critical. Cloud-based lifecycle services remain essential for device management, monitoring, and location services, helping manufacturers continuously enhance product performance while meeting regulatory and customer expectations. This ensures connected devices evolve efficiently and securely throughout their lifecycle.
