Kioxia Corporation has unveiled a feature-enhanced RocksDB plug-in designed to extend the lifespan and boost the performance of solid-state drives (SSDs) in multi-drive Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) environments. Building on its previous demonstration of an SSD running RocksDB with Flexible Data Placement (FDP), the company is set to showcase this innovation at the upcoming Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit 2025.

Significantly, the new plug-in reduces write amplification and improves throughput across different RAID configurations. In a four-drive RAID 5 setup, Kioxia reports a 46% reduction in the write amplification factor (WAF), resulting in throughput that is 8.22 times higher than MDRAID performance. Similarly, in a two-drive mirrored configuration, WAF drops to roughly one-third, while throughput reaches 1.45 times that of MDRAID. These performance gains are achieved by consolidating data writes and executing them sequentially, thereby minimizing data fragmentation and reducing garbage collection operations.

Moreover, Kioxia plans to release the plug-in as open-source software, reinforcing its commitment to advancing SSD and flash memory technology across the industry. By sharing this innovation, Kioxia aims to help data centers and high-performance computing infrastructures optimize efficiency and meet evolving technological demands. The company anticipates that the plug-in will be publicly available in the first quarter of 2026, allowing wider adoption and continued progress in storage technology.

By integrating this new RocksDB plug-in, enterprises can expect improved SSD longevity, higher performance, and more efficient data management in RAID deployments, ultimately supporting the growing needs of AI and cloud applications.
