IBM and AMD have joined forces to provide Zyphra, a San Francisco-based open-source AI research and product company, with advanced AI infrastructure. Under a multi-year agreement, IBM will deploy a large cluster of AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs on IBM Cloud, enabling Zyphra to train cutting-edge multimodal foundation models. This collaboration is set to deliver one of the largest generative AI training capabilities to date, leveraging the AMD stack on IBM Cloud.

Zyphra recently closed a Series A financing round at a $1 billion valuation, aiming to establish a leading open-source superintelligence lab. The company is focused on pioneering research in neural network architectures, long-term memory, and continual learning. Zyphra selected IBM and AMD for their advanced product roadmaps and ability to provide GPU accelerators at the rapid pace required for its innovation.

“This agreement represents the first large-scale, dedicated training cluster on IBM Cloud utilizing AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs, AMD Pensando Pollara 400 AI NICs, and AMD Pensando Ortano DPUs,” the announcement notes. The initial deployment became available in early September, with expansion planned for 2026. Zyphra will leverage this infrastructure to develop multimodal models across language, vision, and audio, powering Maia, a general-purpose superagent designed to enhance productivity for enterprise knowledge workers.

“This collaboration marks the first time AMD’s full-stack training platform spanning compute through networking has been successfully integrated and scaled on IBM Cloud, and Zyphra is honored to lead the way in developing frontier models with AMD silicon on IBM Cloud,” said Krithik Puthalath, CEO and Chairman of Zyphra. “We’re excited to partner with IBM and AMD to power the next era of open-source, enterprise superintelligence.”

IBM and AMD have a history of AI infrastructure collaboration. Last year, they announced the deployment of AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators as a service on IBM Cloud, designed to optimize performance and power efficiency for Gen AI and high-performance computing workloads.
