Cerebras Systems, the company behind some of the world’s fastest AI infrastructure, has taken a significant step toward strengthening America’s leadership in advanced computing. The company announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to explore deeper collaboration on next-generation artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (HPC) technologies. Through this agreement, both organizations aim to accelerate the convergence of AI and HPC to support scientific research and national security priorities.

Notably, the MOU signals Cerebras’ intent to support The White House’s Genesis Mission, a new national initiative designed to use AI to fundamentally transform how scientific research is conducted. By leveraging advanced AI systems, the mission seeks to dramatically speed up discovery, improve research productivity, and unlock new scientific breakthroughs across critical domains.

“For years, Cerebras has worked with the Department of Energy and its national laboratories on forward-leaning topics,” said Andy Hock, Chief Strategy Officer, Cerebras. “We are proud to support the Genesis Mission and seek to work together with DOE and the National Laboratories to advance the next generation of AI-driven scientific discovery, accelerate R&D productivity, and strengthen America’s leadership in advanced computing.”

Under the terms of the MOU, Cerebras and the DOE will establish a collaborative framework to share information, explore joint research and development opportunities, and potentially enter into future agreements. As a result, both parties intend to speed up the development and deployment of secure, scalable, and energy-efficient AI infrastructure tailored for demanding scientific and national security workloads.

More specifically, the collaboration will focus on advancing several strategic areas. These include the development and application of large-scale datasets for science and engineering, as well as joint research on advanced computing hardware for AI and converged AI+HPC systems. In addition, the partners will explore innovations in computing architectures, power delivery, packaging and cooling technologies, memory systems, and input/output capabilities. Furthermore, the MOU emphasizes collaboration on AI and AI+HPC software, new programming models, and joint engagement with developer communities. Public engagement in research, education, policy, and science will also remain a key priority.

Beyond this, Cerebras is evaluating additional opportunities to work closely with DOE and the National Laboratories to build world-leading wafer-scale AI supercomputers. These systems could serve as powerful accelerators for both scientific discovery and national security applications. The company is also looking to develop advanced AI models and converged AI+HPC workflows, including innovative AI “co-scientist” capabilities that could reshape how research teams approach complex problems.

Importantly, the agreement may expand to include pilot programs, technical exchanges, and joint R&D efforts, all aimed at strengthening domestic AI capabilities and accelerating U.S. research productivity.

This MOU builds on a long-standing partnership between Cerebras and the DOE. Over the past decade, DOE laboratories were among the earliest adopters of the Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine, the world’s largest commercially available AI processor. Since then, Cerebras-powered AI supercomputers have enabled breakthroughs in genomics, clean energy, molecular dynamics, and computational fluid dynamics, while also delivering faster-than-exascale performance on key mission workloads. Together, these efforts underscore a shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI and HPC for the benefit of science and national security.
