Strong AI governance requires robust frameworks for data use, clear guidelines for AI implementation, and stringent standards. Companies should establish a framework from the outset that enables them to implement AI technology ethically and responsibly. Here are five steps to build trust and maximize the benefits of AI through effective governance.

Be Transparent

The vast majority of businesses use AI to fix problems. The variety of issues can be infinite and differs from industry to industry. Banks use AI to detect fraud and misuse; manufacturing companies utilize AI to optimize the performance of machines on factory floors; and construction companies employ AI for risk assessment and management. 

However, these same companies may fail to inform customers or employees that they are using the technology or that it has a discernible impact on their work. The fundamental governance rule dictates that a company should disclose its use of AI and explain said purpose.

Make Data Quality a Board-Level Priority

The foundation of trustworthy AI is quality training.

Yet, few boardrooms recognize this as a critical governance issue. Modern AI models often fail when fed messy, biased, or outdated data. Companies should research and adapt the International Organization for Standardization’s ISO/IEC 5259-5. The standard provides a governance framework to help organizations oversee and direct data quality for analytics and machine learning (ML). It also provides tools to ensure data quality throughout an organization. 

Adopt the Same Protocols for Synthetic Data

Synthetic data is artificial data created by algorithms that is often used in machine learning and for AI testing. It’s much cheaper to produce than high-quality data and, as a result, is often used by companies for training models. However, there it comes with considerable risks, including that it’s impossible to prove the data is free of bias. Better managing synthetic data is a necessary shift in AI risk management. Organizations can no longer treat synthetic data as a simple solution to privacy concerns. It requires the same rigorous governance frameworks as traditional data management, with added layers of traceability and assurance. 

Boost Security

Another benchmark of AI governance is security. Companies must be diligent about how they collect, use, and store data. They should also ensure they are following AI data regulations, which can differ depending on the country or locale. Finally, there should be strong security measures that safeguard sensitive information (particularly for customers) and prevent unauthorized access and breaches.

Building Trust Through Standards-Based Governance

AI will continue to play a larger role in work in the years to come. Making the most of the technology—and protecting employees and customers—requires vigilant governance. This requires more than technical compliance—it demands a fundamental commitment to ethical AI development that strikes a balance between innovation and responsibility. Organizations that embrace comprehensive governance frameworks position themselves as leaders in an increasingly regulated AI ecosystem, transforming compliance from a constraint into a competitive advantage.
