Advantech, a global frontrunner in intelligent IoT systems and embedded platforms, has unveiled MIPI-C (MIPI over Type-C), a new open standard that sets a benchmark for AI robotics and machine vision. By addressing longstanding limitations of traditional MIPI CSI cameras such as restrictive cable design, interference issues, short transmission distances, and complex multi-camera setups MIPI-C significantly enhances connectivity and flexibility for edge AI applications. Remarkably, it extends transmission range from just 20 cm to up to 2 meters, supporting more versatile deployment of AI sensing devices. With its low-latency, cost-efficient, high-bandwidth, scalable, and synchronized transmission capabilities, MIPI-C lays the foundation for next-generation edge AI systems.

To foster collaboration, Advantech has opened all MIPI-C patents and technical specifications, enabling silicon partners, IPC manufacturers, and camera module developers to reduce development cycles and accelerate AI vision deployment across robotics, smart manufacturing, traffic monitoring, and industrial automation.

Advantech emphasizes that MIPI-C redefines edge imaging for the rapidly expanding AI robotics sector. By encapsulating native MIPI CSI-2 signals over a USB Type-C connector, MIPI-C delivers superior image quality and industrial-grade low latency. Its metal shielding, differential signaling, and EMI-resistant design ensure robust performance even in challenging industrial environments. The standard allows single-cable integration for video, control, and power, supporting multi-camera and multi-modal AI applications. With transmission distances now reaching 2 meters, MIPI-C is ideal for humanoid robots, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and industrial vision systems, while also enhancing EMI resistance and enabling 2K–4K imaging for low-latency robotic and VLM operations. Additional features, including auto-identification, over-current protection, LED diagnostics, and foolproof mechanical design, ensure long-term reliability for industrial deployments.

AI Authority TrendCircus SE and Secura Enter into Strategic Partnership to Scale AI Robotics

Advantech is driving a global initiative under the theme “Standardization × Ecosystem.” In Phase 1, the company has collaborated with Appro.Pho and Orbbec to launch multiple MIPI-C camera modules, integrated into edge AI platforms such as the AIR-055 with Qualcomm Dragonwing IQ-9075, the AIR-075 powered by NVIDIA Jetson Thor, and the ARK-2252 using Intel Core Ultra processors. Ready-to-use drivers and reference code allow developers to quickly enable cameras and accelerate AI imaging projects.

In Phase 2, Advantech plans to work with 3–5 industry partners and camera module vendors to advance MIPI-C as an open standard, while collaborating with leading AI chipmakers to define cross-platform motherboard specifications. By promoting this open MIPI-C ecosystem, Advantech aims to accelerate AI machine vision adoption across industrial cameras, transportation, medical imaging, and robotics, paving the way for the next era of edge AI innovation.
