Please tell us about Sama’s commitment to building strong AI development principles.

Wendy Gonzalez: For more than 15 years, Sama has helped some of the world’s largest companies build AI models responsibly, with a core focus on improving model accuracy while supporting an ethical AI supply chain.

How have Data Annotation benchmarks evolved with Gen AI and LLMs? How does Sama leverage its training models to develop new products and opportunities?

Wendy: The biggest evolution in benchmarks have come because of the subjective nature of GenAI prompts and responses. Previously, AI training tended to be more concrete – such as labeling items in an image – which made it faster and easier. Now, the answers to what defines quality, or what is an acceptable model response, can differ from person to person. In short, GenAI has added a layer of complexity.

This is why it is critical to start each new project with a calibration process – an opportunity where we align with the customer and confirm how they define various quality rubrics, golden tasks and benchmarks.

By creating this explicit process, and agreeing early on quality metrics, we can deliver a much higher standard of results.

This is also why our Productized Training platform is so important, especially as the work becomes more subjective and complex. It gives employees additional support and increases their understanding of data annotation and AI development principles. Not only are we helping the next generation of AI workers to build their skills for successful long term careers, we’re also helping our customers by reducing project ramp up times and increasing annotation accuracy.

Please tell us about your HITL approach and how it fits into the SamaAssure Framework

Wendy: Sama’s holistic approach to the development of AI models includes human oversight.

This consists of a vetted, diverse, in-house workforce that offers deep domain expertise – everything from 3D multi-sensor annotation to linguistics and advanced mathematics, across a variety of verticals including AV and ADAS, retail, manufacturing and robotics, consumer tech and agtech. Having a verified workforce is a critical element to ethical AI principles, because it allows transparency into the data chain of custody. We know who is working on our customers’ data.

That vetted workforce is a huge part of how we deliver on our SamaAssure framework, which is the industry’s highest quality guarantee. We have an extensive two week project-specific training session prior to the kickoff of any project. Our annotators are highly trained, and we employ additional project managers and QA teams to ensure projects remain on task and that we effectively address issues before they become a problem. We have been able to consistently deliver a 99% client acceptance rate, which minimizes delays and reduces time-to-market.

Why should companies invest in AI data annotation training? What are the benefits?

Wendy: The cost to train data models is significant, and it’s only increasing. Companies must be thoughtful about where their investment is going and its ROI. Beyond the direct costs associated with hardware, energy consumption, data collection and more, there are the soft costs to consider – on the annotation side that can include rework that causes delays in getting the model into production or errors that result in introducing unwanted bias into your model.

Your predictions on the future of AI, data, and workforce development:

Wendy: Regulations around AI have started, and will only increase.

Governor Gavin Newsom just made headlines by vetoing an AI bill in California because, as he said, it went too far in stifling innovation. However, that didn’t stop him from passing a number of additional pieces of legislation focused on cracking down on misinformation and improving consumer protections, while vowing to do more to put in needed safeguards.

Early laws, like the one passed in Colorado that goes into effect in February 2026, serve as a bellwether for companies developing and deploying AI. Among other things, it requires transparency in high-risk AI applications, insisting on disclosures to consumers when they are interacting with an AI system. This is going to be especially valuable in HR applications, where job applicants will have to be made aware that AI is being used in screening and/or hiring decisions.

As the technology continues to evolve, initial laws will focus on consumer protections, but we can expect to see additional safeguards such as mandatory regulatory sandboxes and third party testing, both of which have already been introduced in Congress.

Regulation is a welcome part of ensuring the future of responsible AI. Companies who prepare now will be the ones who succeed in the long run.
