Kilo Code, recognized as the fastest-growing open-source coding agent, has announced that it has secured $8 million in seed funding. Cota Capital led the round, while Breakers, General Catalyst, Quiet Capital, and Tokyo Black also contributed. With this investment, Kilo Code aims to supercharge the future of agentic engineering by eliminating the friction developers often face with today’s AI coding tools.

While AI coding should ideally help engineers work at unprecedented speed, many popular tools such as Cursor are unintentionally slowing development. Issues like downgraded models, rate limits, confusing pricing structures, and model lock-in have created new obstacles, introducing what the company calls “AI drag,” or artificial friction that disrupts developer productivity.

Kilo Code plans to remove this friction and deliver what it calls “Kilo Speed” to engineering teams. The company emphasizes that engineers can work faster when their tools actively support them. Therefore, Kilo allows developers to work where they prefer whether in VS Code, JetBrains, the CLI, or the cloud. Moreover, engineering teams can use a single platform to manage agentic coding, low-code application development, and deployment workflows. Technical leaders, on the other hand, benefit from fast ROI, with many reportedly seeing payback within the first two weeks of adopting Kilo.

Investors also recognize the potential. “At Cota Capital, we back companies building the infrastructure that will define the next era of software, and we see Kilo doing this,” said Aditya Singh, General Partner at Cota Capital. “Kilo’s vision to build an all-in-one, agentic experience for software developers is what the space needs. Engineering leaders seek simple pricing, high-quality code, and model access to stay ahead of the rapid changes in AI.”

In addition, Kilo Code has been rapidly rolling out new capabilities. Over the past month alone, the team has shipped parallel agents, one-click deployment, AI code reviews, cloud agents, and managed indexing. The platform now supports more than 500 models, with new ones added every week, giving developers the flexibility to choose the best model for each task. Kilo also collaborates closely with leading AI providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, and Mistral, alongside emerging labs, to ensure optimal model performance on its platform.

Thanks to its aggressive roadmap and strong industry partnerships, Kilo has experienced rapid adoption since its launch earlier this year. The company has already achieved the #1 position on OpenRouter, accumulated over 750,000 downloads, and processes 6.1 trillion tokens each month.

Kilo Code was co-founded by Scott Breitenother, founder of Brooklyn Data, and Sid Sijbrandij, co-founder and Executive Chair of GitLab. Highlighting the company’s core mission, Scott Breitenother, Co-Founder and CEO of Kilo Code, said, “Everything we do at Kilo is in pursuit of Kilo Speed. We believe this is the new standard for how engineering teams develop and deploy software, and our mission is to help all engineering teams operate at this pace.”
