Sigma announced that it has joined forces with Snowflake, the AI Data Cloud company, and other industry leaders to launch the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI). This open-source initiative introduces a universal specification designed to standardize fragmented data definitions through an open, vendor-neutral semantic model. With OSI, enterprises can achieve consistent metrics and definitions across dashboards, notebooks, and machine learning models, ultimately driving stronger interoperability across platforms.

“At Sigma, we believe a common, open semantic standard is an absolutely critical step for the industry,” said Mike Palmer, CEO of Sigma.

By championing this initiative, Snowflake and its ecosystem partners are addressing long-standing challenges across industries such as business intelligence (BI), data governance, data engineering, AI, financial services, and manufacturing. OSI’s primary goal is to define semantic metadata in a transparent, open format that transcends vendor lock-in. Consequently, organizations will be able to exchange semantic metadata seamlessly, which in turn accelerates the adoption of AI and BI tools, reduces complexity, and enhances operational efficiency.

Mike Palmer emphasized the urgency of solving this problem, stating: “For too long, organizations have struggled with fragmented definitions of metrics and logic across tools, creating complexity and slowing down the adoption of AI and BI. The Open Semantic Interchange is about changing that, establishing a vendor-agnostic foundation that makes data and AI more interoperable, accessible, and valuable for everyone. This effort builds on our deep integration with Snowflake’s semantic capabilities and accelerates the move toward a future where business teams can trust that data and semantics are defined once, governed centrally, and understood everywhere.”

As a launch partner of OSI, Sigma has committed to advancing a transparent and community-driven standard for semantic model sharing. This effort ensures that business metrics and definitions remain consistent, fostering interoperability across platforms. By doing so, Sigma and its partners aim to give organizations more flexibility, efficiency, and clarity in building modern data infrastructures.

Josh Klahr, Director of Analytics Product Management at Snowflake, reinforced the importance of the initiative: “The Open Semantic Interchange is a critical step toward unlocking a new era of interoperability across the data and AI ecosystem. By working with partners like Sigma, this initiative ensures a common, standardized understanding of semantic data across tools. This will enhance interoperability and vendor neutrality, providing organizations with greater flexibility and efficiency in building their data infrastructure, and simplifying data operations.”

With OSI, the industry takes a transformative step toward revolutionizing interoperability in the data and AI ecosystem. By unifying data definitions and driving community collaboration, the initiative promises to simplify operations, spark innovation, and empower organizations to build scalable, future-ready infrastructures.
