MariaDB plc shared that it has completed the acquisition of SkySQL Inc., the team behind a cutting-edge, AI-driven, serverless database-as-a-service (DBaaS) platform. With this strategic move, MariaDB brings SkySQL’s proven DBaaS product back into its portfolio. Interestingly, MariaDB originally developed SkySQL before spinning it out as an independent entity in 2023. Since then, SkySQL has made significant strides in enhancing its product capabilities. By acquiring SkySQL, MariaDB aims to deliver more flexibility and deployment options, from self-managed setups to fully managed cloud offerings. Moving forward, SkySQL will serve as a core element of MariaDB Cloud.

Market analysts reinforce this trend. IDC forecasts that more and more enterprises are moving their workloads to cloud database solutions to gain better scalability, reduce costs, and improve accessibility. This migration is largely driven by the demand for infrastructure that can adapt quickly to evolving business needs and distributed teams. MariaDB Cloud meets this growing demand by providing a fully managed DBaaS available on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Developers also gain access to a serverless mode, allowing them to build AI-driven, cloud-native applications instantly and cost-effectively. Furthermore, integrated agent AI features transform how developers interact with complex operational data, making the process more intuitive and efficient.

The entire SkySQL team has now joined MariaDB, adding valuable DBaaS expertise to its product, engineering, support, and marketing teams. This acquisition also continues MariaDB’s expansion momentum. In June 2025, the company acquired Galera Cluster, a high-availability solution, and earlier in January 2025, it launched an enhanced version of MariaDB Enterprise Platform featuring open-source vector search. The platform has since earned recognition as Best Overall Database in the DBTA 2025 Readers’ Choice Award and Best in Open Source AI at the AI TechAwards 2025.
MariaDB’s rapid growth follows its transition to a private company under K1 Investment Management and the appointment of Rohit de Souza as CEO in September 2024. With SkySQL now back in its portfolio, MariaDB is clearly positioning itself as a leader in delivering next-generation database solutions for enterprises worldwide.
