August 25, 2025 – Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has officially launched Macrohard – a bold, AI-only software company aimed directly at replicating and potentially competing with Microsoft’s software empire. Musk announced the initiative on X (formerly Twitter), calling the name “tongue-in-cheek” but underscoring that the project is “very real.”

Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on August 1 indicate that xAI is laying the groundwork for a wide array of AI-powered services, from speech-to-text and chatbot tools to AI-driven design, coding, and gaming software.

Macrohard is envisioned as a “multi-agent AI software company.” Musk plans to use xAI’s Grok chatbot to deploy hundreds of specialized AI agents capable of writing code, creating visuals, understanding media, and testing software, all within virtual environments that emulate human workflows.

This AI architecture will run on xAI’s Colossus 2 supercomputer in Memphis, supported by millions of NVIDIA GPUs, enabling massive computational power to drive continuous AI development.

Musk argues that since software giants like Microsoft don’t manufacture physical hardware, their operations could theoretically be simulated entirely by AI, from product development to management.

While the name Macrohard plays on Microsoft, the ambition behind it is anything but playful. Musk has long teased the idea, first mentioning it as early as 2021, but only now is he moving it into the realm of reality.
