Sony AI and Audiokinetic Inc., a leading provider of cross-platform interactive audio solutions, have joined forces to introduce an innovative AI-powered audio search capability marking the first solution of its kind within a professional audio production tool, specifically designed for sound effects.

The newly developed feature, named Similar Sound Search, will appear in an upcoming beta release of Wwise, Audiokinetic’s flagship audio middleware for cross-platform interactive and spatial audio development. This collaboration merges Sony AI’s advanced research with Audiokinetic’s industry-leading tools, offering game developers and interactive media professionals a powerful way to navigate complex audio libraries.

Unlike conventional keyword-based search systems that depend on filenames or manually added metadata, Similar Sound Search leverages deep learning to analyze the audio itself. By evaluating sonic qualities such as texture, tone, and rhythm, the tool identifies sounds that closely match either a reference audio clip or a descriptive text query. Consequently, sound designers no longer need to rely on time-consuming manual tagging or combing through massive sound libraries. This method helps creators discover surprising connections for example, a file labeled ‘smashing fruit’ might end up matching sounds like ‘footsteps in mud.”

The AI models driving this feature were trained using professionally licensed sound libraries from BOOM Library and Pro Sound Effects, ensuring production-ready results for high-quality audio projects.

“This collaboration represents a major step forward in how creators interact with sound,” said Yuki Mitsufuji, Lead Research Scientist, Sony AI and Distinguished Engineer, Sony Group Corporation. “We’re enabling audio professionals to find and design sound in a more intuitive and creative way. The improvements in finding sounds that accurately match the search and the ability to find sounds that perhaps would not have been considered offers a new depth of discovery for professional sound designers.”

Martin Dufour, CTO at Audiokinetic, added, “Our mission has always been to support the creative vision of sound designers and we believe this pioneering project with Sony AI supports new and innovative ways to fulfill that mission. Having this feature integrated and easily available in Wwise will allow sound designers to not only find new sounds, but also to try them out in their game in a much faster and easier way than before.”

With this launch, Sony AI and Audiokinetic are redefining the sound design workflow, making it faster, smarter, and more creative than ever before, and setting a new benchmark for AI-driven tools in professional audio production.
